Rich stews and grilled meats stand out for their depth of flavor, though some choices lean toward comforting familiarity rather than innovation. The pace of service matches the unhurried tone, attentive without being intrusive, which may appeal to those seeking a relaxed evening rather than a brisk dining encounter. Some reviews hint at occasional wait times, suggesting a popularity that can affect flow during busy periods. Nonetheless, the consistency across multiple visits, noted in various Gostilna Stari Mayr reviews, underscores a reliable approach to both food and atmosphere.

Value here tends to be aligned with the sincerity of the experience rather than flashy extras. Modest prices invite an unpretentious enjoyment of quality food that sits well with both locals and visitors exploring traditional Slovenian fare. Dining outcomes are often satisfying, leaving a sense of having shared in something quietly rooted in place and history. That said, those seeking avant-garde dishes might find the selections somewhat conservative. For those curious about its offerings before visiting, browsing through Gostilna Stari Mayr menu images online provides a practical preview, revealing well-portioned plates designed with straightforward appeal and a respectful nod to culinary customs.

We had a three night stay here - a great base to explore the mountains and Llubjana. It is situated in the old centre of Kranj, so within easy walking distance to the local cafes and restaurants and not too far, but a steep walk, down to the railway station. The rooms are clean and spacious and the showers are excellent. The rooms look out onto the attractive pedestrian street that runs through the historic centre, so be prepared for the bells from the churches nearby! Aljaž is a very friendly and helpful host and his young staff are absolutely brilliant - Nejc picked us up from the airport and was very welcoming and all the staff were very attentive to our needs, friendly and very helpful. The downside? The hotel garden area is crammed with tables to seat about 50 people and it could be such an attractive place to sit and relax after a day walking around the mountains or the capital. The hotel is looking a little tired and could do with some updating, but we liked the slightly quirky, rundown character (and the ancient sound system playing hits from 1980's constantly!) but when the hospitality and friendliness of the staff is so good, one can put up with a few negatives. Breakfast was good and substantial and the communication prior to arrival, including some tourist information compiled by Nejc, which was very useful, too. Self check-in was also very straightforward. Prices are very competitive, given how close the hotel is to very expensive areas like Bled and Llubjana. Airport transfer is also a major plus point! If you are cyclist or travelling on bicycles, this is a great place - perfectly situated to explore the mountains (a quick trip on the railway will transport you to some fantastic cycling routes, including the new Bled-Bohinj cyclepath, which is spectacular - a 'must-do' ride). It also has secure lock-up for bikes and bike boxes and the hotel van can accommodate large bike boxes. Kranj is a lovely town - the centre has a quiet, understated charm and a smattering of good restaurants and cafes, so worth staying a couple of nights, and this hotel is a comfortable, friendly place to stay.

This is a pretty nice hotel. The rooms are clean and spacious with a nice view of the city. One thing I'll say is that the beds are quite firm. The service was good. The man who I assume runs everything is very personable. If you are driving to this hotel, heed this advice: just put in the directions for the restaurant Das Is Walter, it will be easier to find the parking and walk up to the restaurant. The area is a nice pedestrian street in Kranj. When we were there nothing much was open, which we found odd. But there seems to be many little restaurants and bars to walk to from the hotel. We didn't pay extra for the breakfast, but it looked good.
